Learn to Canoe

Have you ever wanted to rent a canoe and venture out on a lake or gently flowing river for a day of paddling?  Or have you always wanted to go canoe camping in Algonquin but felt that you did not have all of the required skills? The Ottawa River Canoe Club offers Recreational Canoe courses, led by certified instructors, which can be tailored to meet your needs and goals.
 
Introduction to Recreational Canoe is an evening course that introduces you to the basic handling and strokes of this beautiful and versatile boat.
  • ORCC Member Cost: $40 per person
  • Non-member Cost: $60 per person
Intermediate Canoeing

Intended for the canoeist with some experience and mileage under the belt, this course will introduce new concepts to allow paddlers to become better technical paddlers as well as more adept at safe boat handling in less-than-ideal weather conditions. 

  • ORCC Member Cost: $40 per person
  • Non-member Cost: $60 per person

  • Private one-on-one "Learn to canoe" sessions: sessions designed based on individual needs and time schedule and thought at a pace that suits you. Please email canoeing@orcc.ca to request a private session.
    • ORCC Member Cost: $100 per person
    • Non-member Cost: $140 per person
      
    Advanced Recreational Canoe for Tripping is a 1 1/2 to 2 days course that is intended for the avid paddler who is interested in refining technique, navigation, logistics and safety for overnight canoe camping trips.The course is customized to fit the needs of the participants.     • Cost: $100 per person, the course requires a minimum enrollment of 4 people.
    Free 1 day club pass is included in the cost of the course and allows you to drop by the club during regular club hours after completing the course to try boats and equipment appropriate to your skill level.

    Please be sure to dress appropriately for the sun and weather as the course is held outside and on-water. 

    What to bring: 

    • swim suit and towel,
    • hat, sunscreen, 
    • long sleeve paddling top
    • secure shoes for walking on the rocky shoreline
    • warm clothes for afterwards, 
    • snack and a bottle of water. 

    Effort level: moderate, with a few instances of relatively high intensity throughout the course. 

    ORCC reserves the right to cancel a course due to bad weather and an alternate day/time will be offered to affected participants.


    Canoe courses are typically scheduled on Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to about 8:00 PM.  Additional sessions may be added during the busy months (June, July, August) depending on demand.
